As a highly respected skateboarder and co-founder of SUPRA. What’s the story behind building your own shoe company?
We started in 2006, I was riding for Emerica at the time and I was approached to co-found a shoe company and it was something I could put a lot of creativity in and basically have a lot input in the designs and have some ownership and I thought it was worth the risk and it’s been amazing so far.
In your sixth signature shoe, “The Ellington” you added extra technical features to the typical slip-on shoe, what inspired you to create this innovative design?
I was sick of seeing really simple, simple shoes. My last shoe before that was the “Avenger”, so I kept the sole of the Avenger, which came out two years ago. I think that that [shoe] was a little ahead of its time when people were still liking slip-ons and stuff like that. I really like that shoe a lot. So when we started working on the Ellington shoe, we kinda simplified the toe area and made it a mid-top. And then kept some of the original aspects of the avenger like the lace eyelet, and the sole obviously. So that was the thinking, I was tired of seeing similar thing and vans rip-offs and I thought it was time for something different.
Before creating Supra, what shoes did you wear for skateboarding? While skateboarding, were there certain aspects of the shoes that were missing and made available through Supra?
Before I was wearing Supras, I was wearing the Ellington shoe I designed for Emerica and so it wasn’t missing anything. Basically for my shoes I have had input on [all of them] and I have designed them from the ground up. The shoes all have rubber soles, and it’s kind of difficult to explain that one. All of the things we implemented into Supra shoes Suprafoam, Supratuf, they do have a lot of technical features that other shoe companies don’t offer. So we didn’t have access to that stuff previously, so it’s definitely there’s some advanced shit in them.
Tell us about the name “Lizard King”, it sounds so cool!
Just some guy that I used to skate with a lot just started calling me Lizard King and that was 10 years ago and no one has ever called me anything else since.
Lizard King
So what’s craziest thing you‘ve ever done in skateboard career?
Waking up everyday is pretty crazy. Everyday is pretty crazy, you just try to jump down the highest possible thing and try to die pretty much everyday. Shred til your dead.
The skateboarding moves that you do such as “one foot” or “airwalk” are really unique. How did you come up with such creative moves?
I dunno just watching videos when I was a kid and just I had seen it in videos and I thought it was cool and I was gonna try to do it and I guess I got good at them.
There are many iconic heroes in Philly, like Rocky Balboa, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Allen “The Answer” Iverson, and of course, Stevie Williams. How did this Philly Background influence you as a pro skater and sneaker designer?
First of all, I’m not a shoe designer, I just wear dope shoes and they feel good. As far as being iconic form Philly, Philly has a huge history of boxing, poetry, athleticism, and music, to be in the same be involved in representing a city that’s pretty much was Stevie Williams is. Next to Rocky, Allen Iverson, Beanie Sigel, Teddy Pendergrass, Phyllis Hyman, Just having a name to come out of Philly that can be as iconic as the one I look up to is pretty cool. So I represent Philly, all day.
After joining the Supra team last year, what is the biggest change that you have felt?
Truthfully, there really haven’t really been any changes. I know that when I got picked up by Supra a year and a half ago there was a different element that Supra brought on for me far as Lifestyle and DGK, tastemakers and the entertainment industry. There really hasn’t been any change, we are all professional skateboarders, we all pretty much know about each other and looked up to each other and to be a part of it, I feel like I’m an added piece, different component to that can help the brand Supra and chilling and skating with the skaters from Supra, just be part of the movement. If anything Supra is changing the game by with the movement that we all have on the team. It’s an eclectic group of skaters that make the brand real diverse. I think that’s pretty much the only change that’s been added and but it’s and added change and a good change for the brand.
Stevie can you tell us about the original concept about S1W?
I like to skate in a lot of high-top sneakers and, with Supra being so fashion forward and creative; I went and asked the designer Josh to create a high-top based on the Vaider, with a more Stevie street wear feel; something that we could pop a bunch of colors with, that not only skaters but also tastemakers and people outside of the industry can wear it and support it. It came off almost first try, it was like… I told him the design and the sample came in and after a few extra tweaks it was exactly what I wanted. I didn’t have to go through too much stuff. It was cut and dried.
When you started skateboarding, who were the most influential figures for you, and why?
LZ: These guys (Stevie and Erik)
SW: I grew up watching Henry Sanchez, Jovontae Turner, Guy Mariano, Pepe Martinez
EE: Jason Lee, Mark Gonzales, Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, Sal barbier
LZ: Andrew Reynolds!!
EE: Jovontae, Henry Sanchez
What would you say is the trickiest skateboarding move? How long did you have to practice?
Everyday skateboarding is a pain in the fucking ass. Like, sometimes you wake up and it just doesn’t work no matter what you try, try your hardest with no success, and the next day it works totally perfect.
There’s none of the same days, you have a good day today and tomorrow you can suck. You just gotta take it as the day goes by and keep skating and keep trying your best and a make the fans happy and yourself.
Can you give some suggestions for the younger skateboarding generation?
EE: Be humble.
SW: Keep skating.
LZ: Put the passion in the air and Let it loose.
